Pain That Spreads or Moves: What It Could Mean
Pain does not always stay in one place. In many cases, patients feel radiating pain that travels from the lower back into the leg, from the neck into one of the arms, or even discomfort that seems to move between different areas of the body. These symptoms are usually painful, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a way to deal with them.
While occasional changes in pain location can have many explanations, persistent or unexplained body pain deserves proper medical evaluation. Understanding the possible spreading pain causes can help you recognize when it may be time to seek professional advice.
Why Does Pain Spread?
Chronic pain that is widespread or that can be felt in more than one site is relatively common. One in 10 adults in the general population report chronic widespread pain. One of the common reasons for that traveling pain is nerve irritation or compression, which can happen when tissues or bones compress or put pressure on one of the surrounding nerves in the body.
When a nerve is compressed or pinched, the pain may be felt along the pathway supplied by that nerve rather than only at the site of the underlying problem. For example, a compressed nerve root in the lower spine can cause pain that radiates from the back into the buttock and leg, and a heart problem can cause symptoms extending into the shoulder, arm, or hand.
Pain sometimes travels across different parts of the body because of the interconnected nature of the nervous system; where pain signals can be sent to areas other than the area affected by the pain stimulus. Nerve-related pain may also feel different from ordinary muscle or joint pain. As it is more associated with:
- Burning pain.
- Tingling without a clear cause or injury.
- Numbness or weakness in the extremities.
- Unusual sensitivity to touch or cold temperatures.
- Worse pain during sleep.
Causes of Spreading or Moving Pain
Now that you know why pain travels, it is time to know what it means. Radiating pain that is related to nerve damage can result from several conditions like diabetes, herniated discs, shingles. While referred pain (pain that is felt in a different body part than the damaged one) indicates underlying health problems like gallstones or inflammatory bowel disease.
The following are common causes for each type of traveling or spreading pain:
- Nerve-related radiating pain
- Diabetes
- Sciatica and lumbar radiculopathy
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Arthritis
- Referred pain
- Shoulder pain could be connected to gallbladder or pancreatic conditions
- Arm, shoulder, jaw, or chest pain could be connected to heart conditions
- Back or flank pain could be connected to kidney or abdominal conditions
- Multisite pain
-
- Fibromyalgia
- Generalized osteoarthritis
- Depression and anxiety
When Should You Seek Professional Advice?
If you are suffering from pain, tingling, or weakness that is moving alongside parts of your body, it is recommended that you seek a professional evaluation. You should also seek medical care if your pain is persistent, repeatedly spreading, worsening, or accompanied by symptoms such as loss of sensation.
Moreover, you should be aware of the symptoms which require more urgent assessment. For example, sudden weakness, significant loss of sensation, or bladder habit changes in someone with back and leg pain can indicate significant nerve compression and should not be ignored.
Find the Cause, Not Just the Location of Pain
When pain spreads or seems difficult to explain, identifying the underlying cause is an important first step toward effective treatment. That is why it is advised to get diagnosed by a pain specialist like Dr. Samer Abdel-Aziz.
At Dr. Samer Abdel-Aziz’s pain clinic, we carefully assess patients with back pain, joint pain, nerve pain, migraines, and other types of chronic pain. We also develop treatment plans for every one of our patients based on their individual symptoms, needs, and preferences.
