Neck and Arm Pain

Neck and arm pain are common issues. Poor sitting posture, bending the head while reading, and excessive use of electronic screens have become widespread habits, increasing strain on the neck muscles. Additionally, neck joint degeneration occurs with aging.

Causes

  • Muscular pain.
  • Facet joint arthrophathy.
  • Discogenic pain, which may cause pain radiating to the arm if the disc is compressing a nerve root.

Prevention

  • Keep a good posture when sitting or standing.
  • Avoid neck flexion for long periods of time while using mobile devices or while reading.
  • Avoid heavy lifting on the shoulders.
  • Keep the head at the same level with the trunk when lying down in bed by having a small pillow under your head.
  • Perform neck stretches and muscle strengthening exercises.

Treatment

  • Most cases of acute neck pain, improve naturally in few days or weeks.
  • We recommend applying heat wraps and using medications like Ibuprofen or muscle relaxants. Physical therapy may also be helpful.
  • If the pain does not improve in 3 months, we work in our clinic on identifying the source of the pain and treating it.

We perform the following interventional procedures to treat neck pain:

Radiofrequency ablations, to denervate the facet joints in the cervical spine.

Cervical epidural steroid injections for pain radiating to the arm (cervical radiculopathy).

Spinal cord stimulation for neuropathic upper extremity pain or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

  • Spinal Cord Stimulator Trial.
  • Spinal Cord Stimulator Implant.
