Back Pain

Back pain is very common and can be severe affecting sleep and daily activities.

Causes of Back Pain

  • Muscular pain caused by heavy lifting, sudden or incorrect movements.
  • Intervertebral disc disease.
  • Facet joint arthropathy.
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
  • Spinal canal stenosis, etc.
  • Poor posture or herniated (slipped) disc.
  • Scoliosis or spine curvature issues.
  • Sciatica (nerve compression).
  • Lack of exercise or obesity.
  • Smoking, stress and muscle tension.

Prevention

To keep your back healthy, make sure to do strengthening exercises of the back and core muscles and to keep a healthy weight. Try to stand up straight and to sit up straight. Avoid heavy lifting when possible. When lifting, use your leg muscles and keep your back straight while bending your knees. Avoid twisting your back when lifting, and keep the object close to your body. These habits can help prevent strain and long-term back pain.

Treatment

  • Most cases of acute low back pain, improve naturally in few days or weeks.
  • We recommend applying heat wraps and using medications like Ibuprofen or muscle relaxants. Physical therapy may also be helpful.
  • If the pain does not improve in 3 months, we work in our clinic on identifying the source of the pain and treating it.
