Causes
Shoulder pain can be caused by a tear in the ligaments or the muscles of the joint. It can also be caused by arthritis. In some cases it could be neuropathic after injury or after surgery. Other potential causes include inflammation of the tendons (tendinitis), bursitis, dislocation, or fractures in the surrounding bones. Overuse or repetitive strain from sports, heavy lifting, or certain occupations can also contribute to pain. Poor posture, nerve compression in the neck or shoulder area, and degenerative conditions related to aging may further aggravate symptoms. In rare cases, pain in the shoulder may be referred from problems in other parts of the body, such as the heart, lungs, or gallbladder.
