Headache and Facial Pain

Causes

There are many causes for headaches and facial pain. One of the most common is migraine headaches which affect about 12% of the population.

What is Migraine?

If a headache has two of the four qualities below and is either associated with nausea or is worse with light or noise, it may be diagnosed as a migraine after excluding other causes of headaches:

  • Severe in intensity
  • Worse with activity
  • Affecting one side of the head
  • Throbbing in nature

Prevention

Migraine feeds on change. Try to have a fixed daily routine of sleeping, eating and exercising.

Treatment

  • If the headache is frequent (more than 6 days of headaches in a month), we use preventive medications to decrease the frequency and intensity of the headaches.
  • We use acute medications to stop headaches, which should not be used more than twice a week to avoid medication overuse headaches.
  • If medications are not effective we use interventional procedure.

We perform the following interventional procedures to treat headaches and facial pain:

C2-C3 and Third Occipital Nerve radiofrequency ablation.

Occipital nerve blocks.

Botox injections for chronic migraine headaches.

Trigeminal nerve blocks.

Sphenopalatine ganglion blocks.
